Weed control

Urban roots horticulture can help you with providing effective control of unwanted annual and broadleaf weeds and grasses around your property and garden. There are a number of methods we employ to combat the growth and spread of annual weeds, ranging from Physical control to Cultural control and from mechanical control to Chemical control.

Physical control is one of the most popular methods to reduce weeds and is commonly practiced in smaller gardens, flower beds and borders. It involves hand hoeing or pulling and is one of the simpliest and productive methods of controlling annual weeds.

Mechanical control is an effective way of weed control for larger areas of your garden, allowing you to cover a larger area in less time.  The weeds can be topped with a lawnmower or srtimmed close to ground level, which may kill them or prevent them from flowering and producing seeds.

Chemical control is a selective way of targeting annual weeds using an herbicide and is commonly practiced on larger areas of the garden and hardsurfaces such as driveways, footpaths and paving areas.

There are also a number of cultural controls that are widely practiced and that don’t involve the use of sprays or chemicals. A ground fleece or weed barrier can be installed to prevent the emergence of any new seedlings. This is generally used for larger flower beds and borders and is cut into the desired length and shape to fit.

Mulching is another great method for weed prevention, providing a sufficient amount of mulch is used to cover the ground and not allowing any light to penetrate. It is also provides other benefits to your plants such as protecting the root systems in heavy frosts, retaining moisture during summer months and adding beneficial bacteria and nutrients as the mulch breaks down.
