Urban Roots Horticulture can help you with effective control of unwanted annual and broadleaf weeds and grasses around your property and garden. We use a number of methods to combat the growth and spread of weeds, from physical and cultural control to mechanical and chemical control.
Physical control
One of the most popular methods, commonly used in smaller gardens, flower beds and borders. It involves hand hoeing or pulling and is one of the simplest and most productive ways of controlling annual weeds.
Mechanical control
An effective approach for larger areas, covering more ground in less time. Weeds can be topped with a lawnmower or strimmed close to ground level, which may kill them or prevent them from flowering and producing seeds.
Chemical control
A selective way of targeting annual weeds using a herbicide, commonly used on larger areas and hard surfaces such as driveways, footpaths and paving.
Cultural control
Methods that don't involve sprays or chemicals. A ground fleece or weed barrier can be installed to prevent new seedlings emerging — generally used for larger beds and borders, cut to shape to fit.
Mulching is another great method for weed prevention, provided enough mulch is used to block out light. It also protects plant roots in heavy frosts, retains moisture during the summer months, and adds beneficial bacteria and nutrients as it breaks down.
