When it comes to planting in the garden, there are a number of important factors to be considered before choosing any plant for a particular situation or location.  More often than not, some of these factors can be overlooked, which in turn may have a detrimental effect on the overall health and performance of your new plantings. Some of the key factors for planting include:

Hardiness

Each plant has a hardiness rating scale ranging from H2 – H5. This refers to the plants ability to tolerate colder tempertures and their tenderness to frost.

Any plant catergorised as H2 would be a plant that is tender to frost and would not tolerate tempretures lower than between 1 – 5 degrees celsius. Whereas a H5 plant would be Full Hardy and and would tolerate tempretures well below freezing, from -10 to -15 degrees celsius.

Aspect

What positon does your garden face?

Is it North/South/East/West facing? A South facing garden will enjoy full sun for most of the day.

Soil type and condition –

Composition – Is it Clay, loam or sandy soil?

What is the soil moisture content?

Is the soil heavy or light, free draining or compacted and waterlogged?

What is the soil P.H.? Is it acidic, neutral or alkaline? This is one of the most important factors to be considered when deciding on what plants and shrubs to choose for your garden.

Uses

Is it for Decorative or Ornamantal purposes? A specimen tree planted out on its own or a plant that has very distinct foliage or an unusual flower and or fruit.

Do you want it for Seasonal interest?  I.e.Coloured stems or bright fruit/berries in winter, Full foliage and flowers in summer.

It can be used for screening unsightly views or for dividing up the garden into different areas.

An established plant or hedgerow can also act as a great Soundproofing barrier, reducing noise from neighbouring building works and from heavy traffic on a busy roadway.
